Australia’s Hidden Water Crisis: 32 Years of PFAS Exposure Revealed

Two recent investigations by Channel 7 and ABC News have brought a long-buried national health issue into the spotlight: PFAS chemicals are contaminating drinking water across Australia — and have been for more than three decades.

For many Australians, this is the first time they’re hearing about it. But for others, the contamination has been quietly affecting their homes and health for over 32 years, largely without public knowledge or adequate government response.

What Are PFAS and Why Are They Dangerous?

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals used in a variety of industrial and consumer products. Their most notorious use in Australia has been in firefighting foam, particularly on military bases, airports, and training facilities.

These compounds are known as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment — or the human body. Instead, they accumulate over time, and have been linked to:

  • Certain types of cancer
  • Hormone disruption
  • Liver and kidney damage
  • Immune system suppression
  • Reduced vaccine effectiveness in children

How Did This Happen?

Both Channel 7 and ABC have reported that PFAS runoff from firefighting foam use has leached into soil, groundwater, and drinking water supplies in certain areas across Australia — some dating back to the early 1990s.

One Channel 7 report revealed families in affected areas have been drinking, cooking, and bathing in contaminated water for more than 30 years, often without any formal notification.

Meanwhile, ABC News found that Australia lacks a national standard for PFAS in drinking water, and that many affected communities have had to push for answers on their own.

Despite global awareness of PFAS risks — and countries like the U.S. moving to ban them outright — Australia has not yet implemented comprehensive action to protect families from exposure.

Is Your Family at Risk?

PFAS contamination isn’t limited to defence sites or rural areas. Because these chemicals are so persistent, they can travel long distances through soil and water. That means even households far from the original source can still be exposed via:

  • Groundwater used in rural or semi-rural homes
  • Rainwater tanks contaminated by airborne PFAS particles
  • Town water supplies that pass through affected catchments

And the problem is you won’t know by taste, smell, or sight — PFAS contamination is invisible.
